so… guess you all want to hear about my travels. and i have been failing epicly on this front well guess what tonight is your lucky night.

i should get the rest of the V travels done tonight (photos and all) and then independent travels done… though i am starting this ambitious project at 10 and i would like to get in some water coloring… butttttt at least here is part 1 of al that.

so venice may have to be my favorite italian city i have visited yet. it was exactly like the pictures. beautiful. though i could imagine slightly smelly in the summer because the canals were not something you would want to go swimming in!

i suggest it in the spring though! i was expecting tourists up the wazoo. and there were in the main touristy section of the city aka the main square with the main church which is really odd inside btw. the floor has settled weird and if you know me and my gracefulness then you can imagine the number of times i tripped. but got some kinda cool blurry pics…. but the city is beautiful and picturesque and def. challenging on my budget! so many fun presents there!!! everything was GORGEOUS!

at night we would go to this amazing grocery store and get some sick cheese, bottle of wine or beer, bread and fruit. and sit out by the main big canal and watch the sunset and enjoy the amazing weather! it was our first time being in the warm weather… none of us were prepared though so jeans and socks and shoes got pretty warm during the day… but no one was complaining! the sun just was awesome….

we saw the main sights of venice… the palazzo ducale was my favorite! i got lost inside of it it was soo insanely massive! take your entire house. yeah it could fit inside the grand hall/ trial room of this palace… it used to be used as the justice palace for the city and was connected to the jail by the bridge of sighs. which i got to go across… then i got lost in the jail. which was creepy a bit! finally i got back out. but i wish i had had more time to explore… i could have spent all day in there! then we saw a bunch more churches… and climbed some towers (o wait i mean take the elevator to the top of towers… which was lame. i couldnt go up to the top of one… because the elevator made me too nervous…) also if you go to venice. forget the map. seriously it wont help. just wander around. get lost. and enjoy it. also expect to pay a FORTUNE for public water buses and water taxis. and gondalas are overrated and redicuously expensive…

the last day in venice we went to murano- an island right off the main island of the city where all the blown glass is made! I spent too much money buying gifts for everyone but I got them all! and i got some beads to make necklaces when i get home (if anyone is interested!) i got to literally see them blow glass which was so sweet! the man made this intense horse in about 45 seconds!

then the next morning we got on a bus and traveled around the italian country side checking out these amazingly beautiful summer villas designed by palladio (think plantation houses but older and more well italian) and it was pretty sweet. and beautiful and warm. but sadly i had a migraine all day (potentially from the cheap cheap bottle of red wine i drank the night before…) so even though it was amazing. my head was splitting open. the intense sun i hadnt seen in MONTHS didnt really help the situation…

we got to vicenza. went to the hotel. and wandered around. i bought my first blueberry muffin in 3 months. it was YUMMYYyyy. and had that for dinner… then went back and read some and did a little (very tiny amount) of school work before passing out early! next morning we went to another villa designed by palladio called villa rotunda. we had a little hike to get out there but it was worth it. the entire thing was layed out pretty sweet. and it had this epic yard garden area filled with GRASS! now those of you who dont know… there is not much grass in italy. as in not any in genova. so i was slightly overexcited by this prospect. ask anyone i talked about grass for the remainder of the trip… thankfully for them only 2 more days! so i laid in the grass. read a book. did a quick sketch and enjoyed the grass… so amazing then the rest of the day after a lunch break at a market for some bread and cheese (theme here for meals) we visited some more palladian projects. yayy. excitement. no. i just wanted some more grass. i was spoiled.

that night we got on a train headed for verona. the city of romeo and juliet (guilietta in italian) which was great! that night i went and got pizza at this amazing place to go. and then a grocery store for some cheap beer. then headed to a park. i sat on the grass (:D) and ate pizza, drank beer and talked for hours. it was one of my favorite nights! next day was much of the same… we went a visited this huge castle that was refinished on the inside by scarpa. who is pretty much the shit. all of his projects we saw were amazing (a refinishing of a palazzo in venice and a cemetery in vicenza- more on this one in a second!) in this castle he didnt get to make too many changes but the ones he did looked great and were functional. so he gets points in my book! the we had the rest of the day free so i went and did the touristy thing and went to guilietta’s house. saw the balcony along with 100 japanese tourists. and took my picture rubbing the statue of Juliet’s boobs (for good luck in love!) afterwards walking around we found a gelato shop that had KIWI gelato… i got some with strawberry. it may have been my favorite gelato ive gotten in italy yet! then spent the rest of the day playing hearts and reading in the park. it was a chill day but exactly what i needed!

the scarpa cemetery project was by far my favorite thing i saw on this trip architecture wise. he designed literally every single detail down to the hinges for the doors! i took over 100 pictures just at this one site! it was designed a combination zen garden and cemetery… all the details are what really made the project such as stairs you walked up that made different notes. and his controlling of the way you view certain portions of the project! another place i could have spent hours!

and. then we got on the train headed back to genova that night… and now im back at the villa.

okay pics and sketches and water colors on the way!

so i just arrived in venice. fresh off our second and last overnight train. we had SIX six. let me reiterate that SIX people in one little tiny 6x6x7 room! it was BABY. but the beds were actually more comfy. and we got coffee and breakfast this morning so… YAYY.

vienna was pretty cool as a city. i wish we had gotten more time to just walk around and explore but i love art nouveau and its pretty much is just teeming with art, architecture, jewelry you name it from that period.

number one of cool architecture was the otto wagner post office building. now that was really cool to see it because i had been fascinated with it in art history just from photos then to actually go there was neat. also lots of adolf loos buildings. and some well colorful and interesting mass housing… very colorful.

the first two days we went on a tour (walking 1st day then bus tour 2nd day) around vienna with stefan. (must pronounce in distinctly foreign and generic accent) he was THE WORST tour guide ever. he let us see a building for 5 min. and if i had never had an art or arch history class i would not know ANYTHING about any of the buildings. because he was just like “ohh here is the loos house. you take pictures nah? be here back in 5 minutes.” yeah not conducive to learning about architecture.

first night i did nothing. i was exhausted from the overnight train so i just went to sleep after eating my first granny smith apple in europe! i was SOOO excited to find some! it was a good decision! oh and i bought some pear/peach schnapps which i tried and like that night. also a good decision. second night almost all of our group went to a mexican place for dinner. i had nachos and sangria. it was good. then went out for treats and beer. then went to sleep. so overall not too exciting but just what i needed.

last day was back with guiditta and we went and had a pretty chill day just walking around saw a couple projects. went back inside the loos house- which is now a bank. then got to see this AWESOME market. got wasbi and curry hummus with falafel! some amazing chocolate- banana and acai berry flavors. and a cool copper metal bracelet- needless to say my budget for yesterday was spent at that market.

then got back on another overnight train. glad all that jazz is over with but i actually had a good time hanging out and being able to just chill out and read for a night.

now its time for explorations of venice. we are here for 3 nights. excitement.

So I am working on catching up with my posts but this trip instead of having one long post I’m going to try and post everyday since I will have Internet! Last night we took a train to Milan then an overnight train to Vienna from 9pm to 830am this morning… So then we got to the hotel and I went and got breakfast. Note to everyone: Austria though they speak German they still have espresso NOT coffee! That’s my one complaint about southern Europe no American style drip coffee… ONLY espresso! Well time to leave for our walking tour! :) updates later!

I leave for my independent travel on saturday morning. bright and early at the time of 5 AM. (train leaving at 5:40)

I am going with my friends Alex (here in Genova) and Spencer (studying in Florence) and perhaps meeting up with another group of people at the end of the trip.

We are waking up early after the villa party (100+ people coming to the villa dressed snazzy to eat, drink, and be merry) which will go late.(around 2am sleep.)

somehow getting to the train station (either cab or walking since the buses dont run that early) then taking a train to Milan where we will get on a flight to Brussels where we will be meeting up with Alex and Spencer’s friend studying there. We stay there 2 nights then headed to Rotterdam for a day and night then onto Utrecht for a night then to Amsterdam where we will spend the rest of our trip!

hopefully i will have interwebs during the trip and keep you updated as i go. if not ill be back a week from this sunday.
